A-Kon 28 - A Celebration of Pop-Culture and Japanese Animation

Posted by Malcolm Gore on

The first weekend of June every year is looked forward to by thousands of fans of pop-culture and Japanese animation. This is the weekend of A-Kon, the United States third largest anime convention, with over 30,000 attendees and thousands of square feet of entertainment, imported goods, collectibles, and artist work. There are panels on a multitude of topics, such as how to build armor for cosplay (costumes based on popular characters from games, movies, and animated series). There are also instructional panels on how to draw comics, how to sew, and how to write better fiction. There are also comedy shows, such as improv groups and a mash-up of funny clips called Anime Hell.

Many people enjoy spending all year building costumes that they wear all weekend for A-Kon, doing photo shoots and posing for all the convention attendees to admire. This culminates in a cosplay contest where costumes are judged based on materials, skill, and the time they took to craft. After the contest there is a large rave style dance with DJ's and plenty of colorful lights!

All in all, the weekend is a fun escape from reality, and for many fans of this culture it is the one time a year they can truly be themselves. If you want to plan for next year's A-Kon be sure to get tickets early online, and book hotels as far in advance as possible, as space sells out and prices go up rather quickly!

For 2018 the event will be held in Fort Worth, Texas at the Fort Worth Convention Center and nearby hotels.

Curse of Ishtar (40 Years of Alchemy)

To the Mesopotamian goddess, Ishtar, Lady of Heaven, daughter of the moon god, Suen and the spirit of Venus, the forthcoming bloody encounter would be a recklessly sensual delight. In her remorseless quest for greater power and superiority and revenge over her sister, Ereshkigal, queen of the underworld, Ishtar prepares her lustful retribution.

The Case of Lidia and the Cuckoo Clock

I have seen a few cases in my life. The work of a psychiatrist is quite surprising from time to time. I’ve had patients who thought they were possessed by the devil or thought they were being haunted, patients who believed they were constantly being followed or even patients who believed they came from another [...]

Temptation of Lilith (40 Years of Alchemy)

….. and as Lilith walked through the garden of earthly delights she beheld the tree of forbidden wisdom and dwelling there in a miraculous serpent who spoke to her thus. “Hail to thee Ishtar, merciful white queen of the seventh star. Feast on the flesh of this tree and fulfill thy destiny.”Then with the light of [...]

The Pagan Festival Ostara

Ostara is the one of the eight pagan festivals throughout the Wheel of the Year. Each season is celebrated and regarded as equally important. It is also a way to understand the natural world and its changes and become more in-tune with the environment. This is one of my favorite times of the year – [...]

Merciful Fate

I knew I was cursed the moment I set my eyes on him. I don’t know how he did it but I was completely mesmerized by his features, his dark eyes and unbelievably kissable smile. It was as if time had stopped just for me to observe the beauty that stood before me. I wasn’t [...]

Twas the Fright Before Christmas...

For many of us, Christmas is all about spending time with family. Being more realistic, it’s often more about sitting around the TV with people we seldom see. So, what do you do if you want to watch something dark and spooky, but everyone else insists on something seasonal? We asked our resident horror expert [...]

Dark Christmas Tales

What better way to celebrate Christmas than with a few grisly horror stories? Jill is always mean to me. She always comments on the way I dress, the way I talk and how I behave around other people. She tells me I should trust no one and that I am better off on my own. She [...]
